In recent years, the North American nut butter market has emerged as a rich case study in how consumer tastes, health trends, and digital distribution channels intersect to reshape a food category. Forecasts suggest the market

This post explores three key forces driving the market’s expansion:

  1. The evolution of consumer dietary preferences

  2. Product innovation aligned with wellness and convenience

  3. The rise of e-commerce as a transformative distribution channel

I invite others in this forum to reflect, critique, or bring in related parallels from other food sectors or geographies.

Why Economists Hate Trump's Tariff Plan

In the modern era of increasingly globalized trade and economic exchange, the idea of protectionism, i.e. implementing measures like tariffs to restrict imports in an attempt to protect domestic industries, is rarely on the table. This is because nowadays, the benefits of having an economy that is open to international exchange is seen as far greater than any cost otherwise incurred. Nonetheless, with his recent “Liberation Day” announcement on April 2nd, Trump has vowed to go against conventional economic wisdom by implementing tariffs on a variety of countries, and especially high tariffs on certain countries, like China (Buchwald, 2025). However, despite Trump’s claims that this will revitalize American manufacturing moving forward, economists remain dubious. In order for us to understand why this is the case, we need to analyze the economic principles underlying Trump’s tariff announcement.

Based on the concepts of comparative and absolute advantage, first developed by economists Adam…

The Evolution of the Human Eye Explained

The human eye has often been made a target by creationists as an organ that is supposedly “too complex to have evolved” and thus an example of evidence against evolution by natural selection. The argument typically goes something along the lines of that having “only half an eye” is useless and that because every part of the eye needs to be in place for it to work, the complexity of the organ seems to be too great to have evolved over time (Evolution of the eye, n.d.). Indeed, the eye is a deeply fascinating organ. However, as with all parts of the human body, its development can be explained based on external stimuli selecting for certain favorable traits within a population of our ancestors over time, in this case those traits being associated with improved visual detection capability.

Returning for a moment to the concept of having only…

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

Listening to the Trump administration talk about their policy ideas is a little bit like listening to someone with a serious inferiority complex. The number of times the idea comes up that America is “being cheated” or that other countries are “taking advantage” of America is far too high coming from the most powerful nation in the world. It’s true that America often has had to bear a heavy burden, financially or otherwise, in the many crises and problems that face the world. However, as the most powerful and influential nation for the past century, this comes with the territory. What the Trump administration seems to misunderstand is that increased responsibility accompanies increased power and influence. You can’t have one without the other. If Trump and his colleagues don’t want to have that responsibility anymore, that’s fine. Just don’t expect the United States’ position as leader of the world to…

China's Time Has Come

The Chinese Are Coming” was once the title of a BBC special aired in the early 2010s on the spread of Chinese culture and influence across the world. Specifically, the show discussed the impact of the Chinese diaspora on different communities, providing an in depth look at the spread of Chinese culture and language. Now, in 2025, some fifteen years later, a similar show could be made about the rise of China to political prominence. However, this time, a better title might be “The Chinese Have Arrived.” Indeed, China has now arrived on the world mainstage as a major political power, and with the United States government disintegrating into a dumpster fire led by a conglomerate of criminals, it will face little opposition as it rises to become the most powerful nation in the world.

China has achieved significant economic growth since the late 20th century, elevating to become the…

Democrats Worried After Election Loss Should Emphasize Calling Immigrants Rapists and Criminals More in Their Speeches – Report

The United States presidential election of 2024 ended in a close, but ultimately decisive victory for Donald Trump, leaving Democrats searching for answers as to what went wrong. Looking forward to the future, the party continues to search for ways that it can better appeal to voters, especially Latinos and young men, who formed the majority of Trump’s support base. In terms of policy ideas, some Democratic leaders have suggested continuing to emphasize focusing on improving Latino immigrant’s welfare through policies like increasing access to social services. However, considering these policy ideas were at the forefront of Harris’s proposals last November, there’s little reason to believe that this will lead to a different outcome four years down the line. On the other hand, there is a growing contingent of Democrats that is suggesting a different approach. Instead of emphasizing giving immigrants equal rights, why don’t we do the exact…

Science Still “Doesn’t Know” About Climate Change says Trump after Wildfire Scorches Southern California – Report

In the beginning of January, California experienced one of its worst natural disasters in recent memory, a huge wildfire that burned large swaths of land in the Los Angelos area. In terms of speculating on how a disaster of this magnitude could have occurred, experts believe that a combination of factors, including a drought brought on by the effects of climate change may have been to blame. However, president incumbent Donald Trump was quick to shut down any speculation, saying that, instead, the blame should be placed squarely on California’s water management policies. Could it be the fact that, California, which historically has very wet winters that have now suddenly turned dry, is suffering from the effects of global warming, a phenomenon that is now affecting every country across the globe. No, says Trump, science still “doesn’t know”. Could be that the hottest year on record is contributing to…
